Facebook Enters into a Music Licensing Deal with IPRS

IPRS (Indian Performing Rights Society) is an Indian copyright society established under Section 33 of the Indian Copyright Act, which undertakes the business of issuing licenses on behalf of copyright owners in India. Recently, after the ban of TikTok in India and various other jurisdictions, Instagram launched "Reels" enabling users to create and share short-form video content. In the light of this, Facebook (owner of Instagram) has entered into a music licensing deal with IPRS to include more sound tracks on its various social media features.

The current licensing deal between Facebook and IPRS would enable the users to choose and add various songs, represented by IPRS, on their videos. It would also give access for users to share music stickers on Facebook stories. Facebook has been actively entering into licensing agreements in the recent times with various music labels including Saregama, T-Series, Zee Music Company, and Yash Raj Films in order to access the catalogue of over 100,000 songs across several different genres in different languages.
